Central Turkey hosts one of the world's most visited tourism destinations, a site renowned for its unique geology and history. On Thursday, a section of a volcanic rock formation collapsed in the Goreme region of Capadocia, killing at least two people and injuring a third, according to local officials.
Authorities deployed medical and rescue teams immediately after the section of the formation gave way. Huseyin Kok, the governor of the province, stated that recent heavy rainfall likely caused the collapse. He noted that rescue crews continued searching through the debris for other individuals who might be trapped beneath the fallen rocks.
The incident occurred during the Turkish Republic Day holiday. Because the site is a major destination for tourists, the area was crowded with visitors at the time of the collapse. Kok said there was no immediate information available regarding the nationalities of the two people who died.
Capadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the center of the country. The region is famous for its distinctive rock formations and ancient underground cities. The site draws large numbers of visitors annually, making it a focal point for both domestic travel and international tourism in Turkey.
