Rainbows Legend June Jones, Hawaii's Top Winmaker, Passes at 73

Former University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones died at the age of 73 on Thursday, according to multiple sources. He holds the record for the most wins in the modern era of Hawaii football, accumulating 76 victories over nine seasons from 1999 through 2007.

Jones guided the Rainbows to six bowl appearances and three seasons with at least 10 wins. His peak came in 2007, when the team completed an undefeated 12-0 regular season and advanced to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. That same year, he secured the Western Athletic Conference championship, adding to the title his squad won in 1999.

The 1999 season marked the largest turnaround in NCAA history. Jones led a 9-4 team to a share of the WAC title and earned National Coach of the Year honors. His run-and-shoot offense produced record-breaking quarterbacks, most notably Colt Brennan, who was a Heisman Trophy finalist. Over his tenure, Jones coached five All-Americans, 52 all-conference performers, and 16 players who were selected in the NFL draft.

After leaving Hawaii, Jones served as the head coach at Southern Methodist University from 2008 until he resigned in 2014. He also spent three years coaching in the NFL. His playing career included a season as a quarterback for the University of Hawaii in 1973-74. He began his coaching career at the same school as a graduate assistant in 1983.

In 2016, Jones agreed to serve as the offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School. Most recently, he held the same position for the Seattle Sea Dragons.
