Wegmans Food Markets will become the anchor tenant of the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon, according to an announcement made Thursday by the supermarket chain and property owner Roadside Development. This move secures a second location for the chain in the Pittsburgh area, joining the store currently under construction in Cranberry Township.
The Galleria is a two-story property totaling 168,000 square feet. It originally opened as a Kaufmann’s department store before converting into an indoor retail shopping center in 1988. Wegmans will occupy approximately 110,000 square feet of the space once the redevelopment is complete.
Jeff Edelstein, President of Roadside Development, stated that the Galleria has been part of the South Hills community for decades. He noted that placing Wegmans on the former Kaufmann’s site allows the company to build on that history. Edelstein said the goal is to give residents another reason to use the Galleria for daily needs while positioning the property for long-term success.
Dan Aken, Wegmans vice president of real estate and store planning, said the company is taking another step in the region with the purchase of the Galleria property. He acknowledged the importance of the site to the local community and described it as an opportunity to give the property new life.
The store will include all standard Wegmans departments, such as produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese. It will also feature restaurant foods and a large selection of wine and beer. Other retailers in the Galleria will remain open while renovations take place.
Renovations at the Galleria are expected to begin in 2028. No estimated opening date has been set for the new Wegmans store. Rumors that Wegmans was targeting the Galleria increased last week after AMC announced it would close its cinemas in the building.
Wegmans first announced its entry into the Pittsburgh market in 2025 with plans for a new store in Cranberry. The company broke ground on that approximately 115,000-square-foot location in August of this year. Construction on the Cranberry store is currently underway, and it is expected to open in fall 2027.
