Beehiiv is offering journalists a package of benefits that includes legal support and a healthcare stipend.

The platform launched in 2021 by former Morning Brew employees. In early 2024, many writers left Substack after that company refused to ban Nazi newsletters. Beehiiv used that moment to attract established names like Oliver Darcy and Ryan Broderick.

Preeya Goenka joined the company in 2022 after a career in email. She has since expanded services for press members. Those accepted into Beehiiv's media collective pay no monthly fee. They receive two years of audience-engagement help alongside the legal and healthcare benefits.

Journalists outside that specific program have voiced frustration with rising monthly costs. Most collective members remain solo operators, but some now run larger teams. Darcy currently employs three journalists. L.A. Material, another collective member, has a ten-person staff covering news across Los Angeles.

Goenka discussed how the company integrates journalists into its strategy in an interview. She addressed who should consider starting a newsletter. She also stated that Substack is not the direct competition.

The interview was hosted by Megan Greenwell and produced by Amanda Darrach.
