Volunteers from the Wildomar Beautification Committee delivered discarded mail to the U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday after collecting debris from the northbound shoulder of Interstate 15. The items were found near the intersection with Grape Street, close to the Lake Elsinore and Wildomar line.
A driver reported the litter to the California Highway Patrol on Sunday afternoon. The driver, who provided photographs to local media, noted that Riverside County election ballots appeared mixed in with the other discarded items.
Officer Jesus Garcia from the Temecula Area CHP Office confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He stated that his office received the report, but the beautification committee members arrived quickly to clean the area. During the cleanup, the group identified what looked like mail and a few voter ballots.
The volunteers passed the items to the Canyon Lake Police Department. Canyon Lake officers then contacted the U.S. Postal Service, which took custody of the collection.
A USPS spokesperson said the inquiry was forwarded to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the unit responsible for mail-related investigations. The agency did not provide immediate details on the status of the mail.
It is not yet known how the mail ended up on the freeway. The Temecula Area CHP Office is asking anyone with information to call 951-466-4300.
