A 19-year-old Norwich Avenue resident is in custody on robbery and larceny charges after a watch sale arranged through Facebook Marketplace turned violent behind a Dairy Queen in Taftville. Police said the buyer showed up with a rifle-style firearm during the transaction.
The account began at 1:21 p.m. Friday, when police received a 911 call from a victim who reported he had been robbed. Officers arrived to find the victim and a witness who had accompanied him. Both were unharmed, and no shots were fired.
The victim told police the deal had been set up through Facebook Marketplace to sell the other party two Rolex Moissanite watches at the Dairy Queen on Main Street. During the meeting, the suspect held one watch while reaching into his own backpack for a wallet, and the victim saw the black buttstock of a rifle. When the victim reached for the watch back, the suspect took off along the train tracks.
A photo of the suspect went out to officers on scene, and a perimeter was established around the area. A K-9 team responded from Troop E State Police to track the suspect. During that track, an officer working the perimeter spotted a person matching the photo and detained him.
Calvin Leacock Jr., 19, of Norwich Avenue, was arrested on charges of first-degree robbery and fifth-degree larceny. Police said an AR rifle buttstock was seized from him and that investigators do not believe he carried an actual rifle, only the buttstock. He was given a $50,000 bond.
