Local businesses in downtown Homewood will extend their hours on Thursday, Nov. 5, to mark the start of the holiday season. The Downtown Homewood Holiday Open House runs from 5 to 8 p.m., inviting residents and visitors to browse storefronts that stay open later than usual. Shop owners will offer exclusive promotions and discounts to guests during the event. The evening includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres and holiday drinks for attendees. A free trolley will run the downtown loop, allowing visitors to travel between shops easily. Carols will be performed, and Santa Claus is scheduled to make a special appearance.
For shop owners, the event serves as a major annual gathering that draws both locals and out-of-town guests. Lynette Minson, a decorator at Tracy-Barrett Interiors, described the first week of November as the store's Super Bowl. She said she enjoys helping people fall in love with their spaces and believes the world needs more beauty. Minson is currently preparing her store for the upcoming event.
Patti Lovoy of Alabama Goods is preparing to introduce local products to visitors. Lovoy noted that many guests from out of town visit relatives during the holidays and frequently buy Alabama-made goods from her store. She said visitors often express the need to bring something from Alabama home with them.
Kelly Seibels at Seibels Cottages plans to welcome clients with live music and refreshments. Seibels described the open house as the biggest street party of the year. She said the event kicks off the season and provides an opportunity to meet many new people who enjoy the downtown area.
The event is designed to encourage social interaction and community connection. Neighbors who have not seen each other since summer use the evening to catch up on the sidewalk. The atmosphere transforms browsing into visiting, turning quick errands into longer outings. The holiday spirit arrives early on this street, before the first cold snap or the last leaves fall from the trees.
The holiday season in Homewood begins with this specific week in November. Shop doors swing open, windows glow with garland and lights, and the community gathers to celebrate the upcoming season together.
