New Zealand defeated India by 87 runs on Thursday at Eden Park, securing their first win in a four-match T20 series. The victory capped a record-breaking performance that saw the Black Caps post 259 for seven, their highest total in the format.
Glenn Phillips anchored the innings with a century, while Michael Bracewell added 65 from just 25 balls. The two combined for 16 sixes and a rapid century partnership, driving the run rate above 12 with four overs remaining in New Zealand's 20-over innings.
The Black Caps began slowly due to a rain-affected outfield that restricted early scoring. Daryl Mitchell broke the deadlock in the third over by hitting two consecutive sixes, but he was dismissed shortly after for 24 off nine balls. Finn Allen provided a steady opening partnership before falling to Axar Patel, but the momentum remained with Phillips and Bracewell.
Phillips reached his century with a six over long off before being dismissed in the final over. Bracewell’s aggressive batting included a dropped catch by Naman Dhir in the 14th over, a mistake that allowed the pair to accelerate the scoring. The pair pushed the total past 200 before Bracewell was dismissed, leaving the record total in sight.
India’s chase unraveled immediately. Jacob Duffy took the first two wickets of the innings in his opening over, dismissing Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. Matt Fisher then removed Abhishek Sharma, sending him straight to Mitch Santner, before Adam Milne bowled Sharma again to leave India at 56 for four.
Santner, who scored only five in the previous innings, struck with his first ball in the eighth over, catching Nitish Kumar Reddy at cover. He followed this with a catch and bowled of Axar Patel in the same over. India’s middle order struggled to stabilize the innings, with the required run rate climbing above 14 per over.
Indian tailenders Prince Yadav and Tilak Varma batted for a partnership of 37 from 42 balls, preventing a quick collapse but failing to close the gap. Varma was dismissed by Nathan Smith in the 19th over. India finished the innings in the final over, with most of the 39,000 spectators having left the ground.
The result places India at 3-1 in the series, with the final match scheduled for Sunday in Hamilton. The win provides New Zealand with momentum ahead of the upcoming one-day international series, which begins Wednesday.
