The Odyssey, a residential cruise ship operated by the Florida-based company Villa Vie Residences, has paused its world tour while docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The company cited a sharp rise in fuel prices as the primary reason for the stop, which forces hundreds of long-term residents to leave their floating homes.

Fuel expenses for the vessel have increased dramatically over the past few months. Monthly costs per cabin, which typically averaged $1,800, have climbed to an estimated range of $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. This spike coincides with the ongoing conflict in Iran. Villa Vie attempted to manage the expenses by slowing the ship's itinerary and increasing port time, but these measures were insufficient to cover the rising bills.

The Odyssey launched two years ago on a three-year journey designed to take residents to all seven continents. The company had planned a confirmed schedule through November 2027. It also intended to launch a second residential ship in early 2029, though a recent statement about the suspension did not mention whether that second vessel would still proceed.

Port officials in Sihanoukville reported that the ship arrived for a planned five-day visit on October 23. The vessel was scheduled to depart for Vietnam but remained in the harbor on Wednesday. A total of 203 passengers from 15 nationalities were aboard, with the majority being American citizens. The ship also carried 156 crew members, although it had a total capacity for 650 residents.

Villa Vie stated that it could no longer sustain the operating losses without raising resident payments. The company noted that passing the full cost increase to passengers was not a practical option. It is currently working to restructure its operations while supporting the passengers, crew, and employees. Passengers have been instructed to disembark, while the employment status of the crew remains undefined.

The company emphasized that its current priority is assisting those affected by the suspension. The decision to halt the voyage reflects the financial strain of operating a large vessel in a region with elevated energy costs.
