Republican nominee John Wahl and Democratic challenger Phillip Ensler will compete in the first partisan statewide general election debate in Alabama since 2010. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, at 6 p.m.

The one-hour broadcast will take place at the WHNT News 19 studio in Huntsville. Nexstar stations in Birmingham, Mobile, and Dothan will carry the live feed, along with WRBL in Columbus, Georgia. Viewers can also access the debate through the stations' streaming applications.

The debate format includes one-minute opening and closing statements. Questions will come from the News 19 political team and from viewers. Each candidate will have the opportunity for a reply and a rebuttal following each question. Wahl won a coin flip earlier this week, securing the right to deliver the final closing statement. Consequently, Wahl will deliver the first opening statement, while Ensler will address the first question.

The last time nominees for a statewide Alabama office faced each other on television was in October 2010. That debate featured Republican Robert Bentley and Democrat Ron Sparks at Athens State University during the governor's race. Republicans have occupied the lieutenant governor's office continuously since that election.

Wahl, a resident of Limestone County, served as chair of the Alabama Republican Party for five years before resigning in January to launch his campaign. He defeated Secretary of State Wes Allen in the June runoff, a primary victory secured with the endorsement of President Donald Trump. This is his first attempt at elected office. Wahl stated that he views the debate as a key chance for voters to hear directly from candidates about their positions on issues affecting daily life.

Ensler is an attorney and the outgoing member of the Alabama House of Representatives for a district in Montgomery. He won a Republican-held seat in 2022 but announced he would not seek re-election, initially planning to relocate to New York. He later entered the 2026 lieutenant governor race. Wahl described himself as an outsider in the race, emphasizing his commitment to lowering taxes and reducing the cost of living for Alabama families.

Both campaigns agreed to the debate structure to ensure open dialogue and government accountability. The event will serve as the primary public forum for these two candidates before the November election.
