Two federal funding packages totaling $105 million were opposed by the incumbent in Alabama's Second Congressional District, a vote that may determine which party controls the United States House of Representatives.

The race pits Republican challenger Rhett Marques against incumbent Democrat Shomari Figures. The outcome of this single seat in southeast Alabama is being watched closely because it could decide the Speaker's gavel. Figures has claimed residency in the district despite maintaining a million-dollar home and a consulting business in Maryland. He also owns a mansion in Mobile, a city located approximately 100 miles outside the district boundaries.

Figures' wife is set to vote absentee in a different congressional district rather than in the race her husband is winning. This arrangement has drawn attention to the district's finances and the source of campaign funds. National Democratic donors have provided substantial financial support to Figures. Among the prominent supporters are Nancy and Paul Pelosi. Contributors from California and New York have also funneled money to his campaign war-chest.

Figures is described as a protégée of former President Joe Biden. He served on the Biden-Harris transition team and held a top staff position in the Department of Justice. During his tenure, the department managed criminal release policies and addressed illegal immigration issues. Figures has aligned himself with the socialist wing of the Democratic Party and is expected to vote alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

His voting record includes support for taxpayer-funded gender surgeries for minors and financial assistance for illegal immigrants. He voted for the largest tax increase on Alabama families in recent history. Conversely, he voted against the Stop Insider Trading Act, the Farm Bill, and pay increases for military personnel. He also supported measures to defund the police and abolish prisons.

Figures opposed $40 million in infrastructure and first responder investments for the district in one annual funding bill. In a separate piece of legislation, he voted against $65 million in rural healthcare funding for the same area. These votes drew criticism from local associations representing farmers, manufacturers, small businesses, and rural electric cooperatives.

Challenger Rhett Marques is a small business owner from Coffee County. He has received the endorsement of U.S. Senator Katie Britt, who resides in Alabama's Second Congressional District. Britt is cited as knowing the area's needs and priorities firsthand. The local business and agricultural groups have backed Marques in this contest.

The election is scheduled for November 3. Voters in the district will choose between the two candidates to send a representative to Washington. The winner will hold the seat that is currently viewed as a key to the House majority. The campaign has focused on residency issues and the incumbent's voting history regarding district-specific funding and national tax policies.
