Gov. Lee expects Pike's death sentence to stand after failed execution
The governor says he will not commute the sentence unless courts rule otherwise, while a new corrections commissioner is expected soon.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee stated on Wednesday that Christa Pike's death sentence will likely remain in place following her failed execution last month. The governor said he does not expect the state to seek a second attempt at execution at this time. He also said he does not plan to commute the sentence to life in prison unless a court orders a change. "As it related to a particular individual like Christa Pike and her crime, she’s still incarcerated under the laws of the state of Tennessee," Lee said. "I suspect her sentence will be the same as before unless determined otherwise by the courts."
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. In September, state officials administered two doses of lethal injection to Pike, but the execution attempt failed. She spent several days in a hospital after the procedure. Pike has since returned to prison. Officials report she can now speak in full sentences and walk on her own.
Lee has paused all executions in Tennessee through the end of 2026. This pause allows the state to determine what went wrong during Pike's attempt. The failed execution was the second botched execution in the state this year. Frank Strada resigned as commissioner of the Department of Correction following the incident. Lee said Strada will leave his post by the end of this month. The governor expects to announce a replacement within the next few days.
Pike's legal team has not yet filed a motion for clemency. The Department of Correction is reviewing the medical protocols used during the September execution. Lee said the review is ongoing. He said the state will make decisions based on the findings of that review. Pike remains in a maximum security facility in Nashville.
