Ten runs. That is the number of runs Milwaukee scored in a single inning on Monday night to take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Rays. The final score was 10-1, a margin that puts the Brewers just one victory away from their first World Series championship.
The decisive moment came in the fifth inning. With two outs, the Brewers recorded seven consecutive hits. This sequence is a postseason record. It was the first time in World Series history that a team scored eight runs with two outs in one frame. The rally started when Jackson Chourio stole second base. He had reached first on a single earlier in the inning.
Christian Yelich walked to load the bases. Victor Mesa Jr. had walked to begin the inning for Tampa Bay, but the Brewers kept coming. Junior Caminero made a play that seemed to end the rally, but a replay review overturned the call at second base. Cam Booser came in to take over the base.
Brice Turang hit a two-run single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls. Walls called it a knife to the chest. Garrett Mitchell followed with an RBI single. Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double down the left-field line. Sal Frelick added a run-scoring double to make it 8-0.
Cole Sulser replaced Booser in the sixth. He allowed an RBI single to David Hamilton and an RBI double to Chourio. Chourio, 22, became the second-youngest player in World Series history to have four hits and a stolen base in one game. Only Ty Cobb in 1908 had done it at a younger age.
On the mound, rookie left-hander Robert Gasser pitched six perfect innings. He allowed only one hit. He faced the minimum 18 batters. This makes him the first starter to do so in a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. He is also the first left-hander to pitch six hitless innings in the Series since Sandy Koufax in 1965.
Gasser faced a tense start when Yandy Diaz hit a line-drive single to open the game. He then retired the next 14 batters. Gasser said the atmosphere at Tropicana Field was intense. He noted that 20,000 Brewers fans cheered from behind the visitors' dugout. He said it was surreal to have that support on the road.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Griffin Jax is set to start for the Rays. The Brewers have not yet named their starter. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said his team has a seat at the table and must win to stay in the series. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy called Chourio tremendous and said he gave the team a big lift. The Brewers have won eight straight games in this postseason, tying the record for a single run.
