Dozens of women met in Tuscaloosa on Thursday to share their stories of survival. The gathering marked the conclusion of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the region.
The event was the eighth annual Purple Purse Luncheon. It brought together community members to support victims of abusive relationships. The group also raised critical funding for local services.
Turning Point, a Tuscaloosa-area agency, received the proceeds from the luncheon. The organization provides support services to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.
Organizer Michele Coley noted that the demand for the event has grown over the years. "Women from all walks of life are now coming forward," Coley said. "Every year I get three or four inboxes on Facebook. 'When are we having it? Am I able to speak and share my story?'. And that’s why I have it every year. Because the community is asking for it. And I’m so thankful that we still have the opportunity to do it."
Attendees were not required to share their personal experiences during the lunch. Organizers said that simply being present in the room showed survivors they do not have to carry their struggles alone. The presence of the group also helped reduce feelings of shame among those affected.
Community members seeking assistance or resources can contact Turning Point’s local crisis services for help. The agency operates in the Tuscaloosa area and offers ongoing support for those impacted by domestic violence.
