Tuscaloosa officials and project developers marked the start of construction for a new luxury hotel and condominium complex on Tuesday. The project, named ALUM, is located at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Fourth Street, adjacent to Tmerson Square.
Mayor Walt Maddox stated that the city’s growth and the presence of the University of Alabama encouraged developers to select Tuscaloosa for their first project in the state. He described the development as a long-term investment that fills a gap in the local market for high-end lodging.
The 116,000-square-foot building will house 68 luxury condominium residences alongside hotel rooms. ALUM CEO and cofounder David Vialli explained that condo owners can place their units into a branded residential rental pool. "We manage it for you, so you really don’t have to do anything," Vialli said. He added that the property will also operate as a private members club for locals and out-of-town alumni.
The facility will include a private members clubhouse, chef-inspired dining, and a rooftop lounge. Developers noted that the location targets guests who support the University of Alabama and attend football games.
Maddox said the hotel will bring hundreds of visitors to downtown restaurants and shops. He called the project important for building infrastructure in the experience economy. The development is expected to employ between 70 and 80 people when it opens.
Developers plan to have the ALUM complex fully operational by July 2028.
