Harry Kane is the favorite to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or, according to bookmakers who place his odds at approximately 70 percent. The award will be presented at the London Palladium on Sunday night, with the competition narrowed to three players: Kane, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappe.

A French data analysis firm named Avisia offers a different forecast. Their model rates Yamal as the most likely winner at 23 percent, followed by Kane at 21 percent. Mbappe and Rodri, the 2024 winner, are tied for third at 19 percent. Lionel Messi holds the fifth spot with an 18 percent chance. Avisia noted that their model correctly identified the top five candidates for the previous year's award, which went to Ousmane Dembele.

Public opinion among football figures is divided. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, stating that the Argentine forward played at his age "No doubt about it" after the World Cup. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, describing the 38 year old as being "in a different league." Jude Bellingham, who is also on the shortlist, endorsed Kane, calling him a "very honest and hard-working person." Anthony Gordon backed his Barcelona teammate Yamal, while Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe.

The statistical cases for the top candidates are distinct. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League in scoring with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot, setting a record with 12 tournament goals. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 goals in 2011-12.

Trophy counts complicate the narrative. Mbappe won no major club or international titles in the qualifying period. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third at the World Cup with England. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite an injury affected season.

Historical trends favor players with major silverware. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not claim the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in their winning year. Yamal is the only candidate among the top three to meet this criterion this cycle.

If Yamal wins, he will become the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record is held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won the prize in 1997.
